  ABI (Ankle Brachial Index)

ABI  Procedure

ABI test is done by measuring blood pressure at both ankles of legs and both upper arms while a person is at rest. The procedure takes only 5 minutes.

This procedure does not involve any injection and it is similar to the normal blood pressure check-up but must be four positions at the same time. The patient does not have to prepare fasting before the measurement. The calculated result is called “the Ankle Brachial Index” or (ABI).

  The Causes of Artherosclerosis

Artherosclerosis is a general term of the thickening or hardening of the arteries. Artherosclerosis is found more common in aging men than women. The possible causes of artherosclerosis are: high blood pressure, diabetes, cigarette smoking, and high level of cholesterol or triglyceride in the blood. People who have artherosclerotic diseases are higher risk of heart attack and stroke than those without.

Why we should have the ABI measurement done?

The ABI can be the predictive index for the developing of the artherosclerosis and the risk of many problems such as:
- Loss of leg from chronic ulcer or gangrene
- Arterial or ischemic heart diseases
- Stroke

You may be advised by the physician regarding the additional screenings. If the abnormality is found, it can promptly be treated. The treatments options are varried or not depended on the overall health of the patients. The treatment can be medical or surgical but most of them can be treated without surgery.

The Price of the ABI test is 200 Baht/ session

What can I do if my ABI (Ankle Brachial Index) is abnormal?

If your resting ABI is less than 0.9, Chiangmai Ram hospital can provide you with many options of care. For example:

We have the vascular specialists and cardiologists for proper consultation

We give counseling and suggestions to control blood pressure. Nowadays, the patients who have arterial disease of the legs are frequently using medication to control the blood pressure (such as B statin, and ACE inhibitors). Many reports are suggested that the treatment is very effective.

The advice to look for the common associating conditions related to the impairment of cardiac and vascular ischemia.

The interpretation of ABI

Normal ABI is 1.0 - 1.1
If  ABI  is   < 0.9    -- suggesting the evidence of arterial ischemia or partial occlusion
If  ABI  is   < 0.5    -- He is very risky to lose his legs in the near future.
(The lesser ABI value is the higher risk for future chance of losing legs.)
