Snoring at night is not only an annoying condition for individuals, it can also be quite frustrating for a spouse or loved one. Is it only a problem for men? The answer is “NO”. It may bring about sleep apnea or difficulty in breathing during sleep which is one of the causes of unexpected death. Both men and women can have the same problem.

The noise from respiration at night or a sleeping condition can be related to a partial obstruction of the air-passage during deep-sleep. This may affect the amount of oxygen getting to the brain and, if it is insufficient, asphyxia to the brain may occur. The result can be insomnia at night, and fatigue during the day.

Snoring and sleep apnea are easily diagnosed in the sleeping lab. One night in the labd is all that is needed to electronically monitor the patient by a special polysonography (PSG). The procedure is painless and there is no risk during the investigation.

The sleep waves of the brain will reflect the level of brain anoxia and show as a cause of pathology. Treatment can be symptomatically applied or by surgically correcting the nasopharyngeal pathway.

Most patients become healthier after the appropriate diagnosis and treatment.
